Climate Change Research and Education

Websites on research, education, outreach and policy related to global climate change.

Direct Seeding, Conservation Tillage, Carbon Sequestration

Website on research, education and implemenation of agricultural practices that facilitate carbon sequestration. In addition to carbon sequestration, direct seeding and other conservation technologies contribute to other ecological services, such as protecting soil and water quality.

Bioenergy, Biofuels, and Bioproducts

Websites related to energy generation - including anaerobic digestion, fuel and other products developed from biomass resouces. The use of biomass-based energy, fuels and other products (such as lubricants, plastics, inks, etc.) contributes to the mitigation of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions by substituting for fossil fuel based energy and petrolium based fuels and products. In addition, farming systems used to grow crops and/or animals for biomass-based energy, fuel and products can directly contribute to the mitigation of GHG emissions, provide other ecological services (such as protection of soil and water resources) and provide alternative sources of income for farmers.

Renewable Energy - Pacific Northwest

Websites of institutions and organizations that are researching and/or promoting renewable energy technologies.

Carbon Credits and Trading

Websites related to markets for "Carbon Credits". Under the plan of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change / Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits can be traded between "emitters" of GHG's (in Carbon Equivalents - CE's) and "fixers" of Carbon. For instance, a power company that emits CO2 can purchase or lease carbon credits from direct seed farmers who are "fixing" carbon through changed tillage practices. Even though the Kyoto Protocol has not been ratified, markets for carbon credits have begun to form.

The Climate Friendly Farming Research & Demonstration Project is a project of Washington State University's Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources which seeks to understand the interconnections between climate change, greenhouse gas emissions and agriculture in an effort to reduce agricultural emissions of greenhouse gases, improve soil carbon sequestration of carbon dioxide, and develop bioenergy, biofuels and bioproducts from agriculture that offset the combustion of fossil fuel carbon.
